"It is a defect of God's humour that he directs our hearts everywhere but to those who have a right to them."
Sidley Park , Derbyshire, 1809: Thirteen year old Thomasina Coverly sits solving algebra amidst chaos.
Her tutor is being courted by her mother, a poet's wife is sleeping with everyone but her husband, and a
landscape gardener is mutilating the ha-ha.
Sidley Park , Derbyshire, 2008: Amongst the usual chaos of sex, death, mathematics and horticulture,
rival academics battle to solve the chaos of two hundred years earlier.
Tom Stoppard's witty and intelligent play was a smash hit when it premiered in 1993,
prompting the Telegraph to state that "I have never left a play more convinced that I'd just witnessed a
masterpiece".
With his characteristic eye for the absurdness of life and ear for sparkling dialogue,
Tom Stoppard explores the weight of history on the present day, and the universal ideas of love and sex that ultimately unite the centuries. In merging science with human ideals, " Arcadia" is a play full of yearning, joy and the possibilities of the present.
